Welcome to EDZA West

EDZA West is one of four zones in New Brunswick and is responsible for nine teams over the Peewee, Bantam and Midget AAA age groups.

The Peewee age group consists of the Fredericton Canadiens, Fredericton Express, Fredericton Caps, North West Bulls and Pionniers du Nord Ouest who all play in the EDZA West Peewee AAA division, one of four similar divisions in the Province, with a total of eighteen teams Province wide.

The Bantam age group has the Fredericton Blues and North West Bulls who play in the NB Bantam AAA Major boys hockey League, an eight team Provincial league. They also operate the Fredericton Caps and the Pionniers du Nord-Ouest who play in the NB Bantam Minor AAA boys hockey league, an eight team Provincial league. There is also the Western Phantoms, who represent the West in a four team Provincial girl’s Bantam AAA league.

The Midget age group has one team. The Midget AAA River Valley Lynx that play in the NSMFHL Midget AAA female league.

HNB approves under-age peewee AAA players to apply for exceptional status

As approved at the Elite Hockey Annual General Meeting, starting in the 2018-19 season Hockey New Brunswick will have a process for under-age Peewee AAA players to apply for exceptional player status.

The application document is attached.  It’s also posted on the HNB website.

Please note – for the 2018-19 season, the process will be adjusted, since the dates as outlined in the application process have already passed.  The process for this coming season will be as follows:

  1. All applications for under-age Peewee players must be filled out and submitted along with payment to Nic Jansen by Sept 4th, 2018.
  2. HNB will assign an evaluator to evaluate the player at a minimum of two Peewee AAA try-outs.
  3. After the evaluations have been completed, HNB will notify the player as to whether they’ve been approved to try-out for Peewee AAA – the criteria needed to be approved is outlined in the Exceptional Player Guidelines.

Pionniers du Nord-Ouest win Peewee AAA Provincials

The players of the Northwest Pionniers played 5 games during the Provincial tournament. Their first game was against the Saint John Sea Dogs where they won 6-2. They won their second game 3-1 against the Miramichi Rivermen. They were defeated 3-1 by the Moncton Hawks in their 3rd game of the tournament. The team came back strong during the semifinal where they won 6-3 against the Fredericton Caps. The Northwest Pionniers played their rival of the tournament, the Moncton Hawks, in finals. They won the gold medal with a score of 7-1!

The Northwest Pionneers are now on board for the Atlantic Championship that will take place in Edmundston on April 5th-8th. The team is also the ”hosting” team of the event.

Blues Most Improved Team

The Fredericton Bantam Major AAA Blues were recognized as the Most Improved Team at the Provincial banquet this weekend.  The team started the season with no wins until late in October.  The players and coaches continued to work away at finding their groove and by the end of the season were in third place.

The Blues finished the round robin in first place at Provincials and put in a strong finish in the semi finals.  They ended up losing to the second ranked KV Kings but the boys showed how far they have come over the winter.

Additional awards at the banquet went to Will Englehart (#30) for Academic Achievement and Blake Green (#1) Second Team All-Star.

Bantam AAA Caps Win Gold at Provincials

The Fredericton Bantam AAA Caps won a Provincial title on the weekend.  The Caps played the the Moncton Scorpions (EDZA East) in the final game.  Moncton advanced to the Provincial final by beating the Saint John Warriors 2-0 in the Saturday night semi-finals.  The Caps faced the EDZA East Phantoms in their semi-final match and won 5-2.

The Caps were down 2-0 after two periods of play in the Provincial finals.  With just under 6 minutes left in regulation time, they scored to make it 2-1.  With the goalie pulled, the Caps scored the tying goal with 1:09 left in regulation time.  With 1:37 left in overtime, the Caps scored the game winning goal to win 3-2!!

Congratulations to the players, coaches and parents for job well done.  EDZA West is proud of our Provincial Champion Fredericton Bantam AAA Caps!

Peewee Pionniers Nord-Ouest Win Zone Title

The Pioneers Nord-Ouest faced off against the Fredericton Caps for the gold medal game on Sunday, March 18.  The Pionniers were able to fight back from a 2-0 deficit for a 4-3 win.  Both teams played great games.  The Caps and Pionniers now advance the the Provincial finals in Dieppe on March 23.  Good luck to both teams!

Cross-Check Cancer Fundraiser Success

The Fredericton Mr Automotives Bantam AAA Caps played their biggest game of the season this past weekend.  No, the outcome of the game didn’t really matter much, it was the meaning of that game that held the significance. The Caps held a fundraiser game appropriately named “Cross-Check Cancer” on Sunday, Feb. 25 while hosting the visiting Northwest Pionniers.

The event was for the fathers of Caps forwards Zander Best and Owen Tran-James Best and Dr. Peter Tran-who were both diagnosed with cancer this season and who are currently undergoing treatment. News of the fundraiser travelled quickly and the Fredericton (Tran’s hometown) and Doaktown/Chipman (Best’s current residence/hometown) communities generously donated BBQ services, food, raffle table prizes, and monetary compensation in a show of support to the two affected families.

The Caps players and families had spent the weeks leading up to the game promoting the event, making posters of support, preparing canteen food, and organizing the raffle table.  Although no monetary goal had been set, the team was overwhelmed with the amount of support and the donations that poured in on Sunday. Through collections at the door, canteen sales, raffle ticket sales, and the 50/50 collection, over $16,000 was raised, far surpassing any expectations. An estimated crowd of 600+ people came out to show their support and to cheer on the two teams at the York Arena that was filled to near capacity. Tran scored the game’s first goal with the assist coming from Best. At the end of a very close game, the Caps prevailed 4-2, with Best adding the empty-netter.  The Caps would like to thank all of the sponsors, volunteers, fans, and the Pionieers team for their support, and contributions to this event.

TnT Western Phantoms win Icicle Invitational

The TnT Western Phantoms won the 2nd Annual Casco Bay Icicle Invitational in Maine on the weekend. They capped off a perfect 5-0 weekend by beating host Casco Bay, ME, Mariners in the semi final 3-1 and the Hanover, NH, Wild 2-0 in the final.

Congratulations Phantoms Girls!! This is the first ever tournament title for the Phantoms program.
